Catering to Your Clients

Now that virtually all business is conducted over the internet, my company’s usage of the postal service is minimal. That being said, there are certainly times when a hard copy of a document is needed. For instance, many of my smaller clients and distributors have yet to modernize and only conduct transactions via check.

While online payments account for the majority of our debits and credits, checks still play an integral role in our day-to-day business. To that end, I always keep dozens of blank checks and check envelopes on hand. Even though my company may utilize more modern means of payment, I recognize the necessity of catering to your clients’ needs

I don’t know about you, but I find it really aggravating when I pull up to the bank to deposit checks and have found that I have ran out of deposit slips. And then you have to fill out a blank one and try to remember your account number, and you feel badly for holding up the line.

The best thing to do is to have your own personal deposit slips made with all your information on them. When you do this you are not only insuring that you have them when you need them, but you are also helping your business to be more efficient and productive. When you don’t have to spend an extra 5 minutes waiting in the bank line you are giving your self 5 extra minutes to focus on your business.

Getting Back at the Big Banks

Many people are still livid over the bailout of major banks and financial institutions over a year ago, and the over $45 billion in bonuses that these companies are poised to payout has only added fuel to the fire. Several organizations are calling for people to pull their money out of these banks and begin banking as local credit unions and small banks. While this may seem like a way to get back at the banks, the current system makes it difficult for this to be a reality.

Not only do the bigger banks offer premium services like online banking and the option to deposit in ATMs without check envelopes, but they also are a safer option. Most of these institution are still considered “too big to fail,” whereas over 140 small banks went out of business last year. Larger banks also have more ATM locations and tend to have fewer charges for international transactions. While it would be nice to get some redemption against the “fat cat” bankers, they have a stranglehold on how Americans manage their money.

endpoint

When I started my own business in the summer of 2008, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought that it would be fun being my own boss and making my own hours, but I soon found that I was spending more time working on my company than I ever did working for someone else. Like most things in life, you anticipate the big challenges but overlook all of the meticulous, time-consuming tasks.

Now that I have been in business for over a year, things are beginning to run more smoothly. I have developed a system that keeps me on schedule and have set aside days for doing the painstaking tasks, like buying office supplies and picking up deposit slips. Not only has this made me more productive when I am working, but it has also lowered my stress levels.
